Our Schemes for Phonics and Reading
Reading is given a high profile at Coppice Valley. We have a fantastic phonics scheme in school called Phonics Bug, which is part of the Pearson Bug Club Reading scheme which we also use.
Each class has a dedicated reading area, furnished to encourage a love of reading with comfy cushions, plants and a great selection of books and comics to read.
Reading at Home
We expect all children to read at home every day with an adult. It is so important to hear your child read to you every day, no matter how good a reader they are or how old they are. Having your child read out loud to you, gives you the chance to expand their vocabulary by explaining the meaning of new words to them. Ask your child questions about what they are reading, to ensure they understand it. 20 minutes reading with your child = 2 million words heard a year!
Book at Bedtime
Read to your child every day. Even 11 year olds still like to be read to by an adult. You should read books that are slightly too hard for your child to read alone. This helps them to learn new vocabulary and ideas, helping their comprehensions skills develop.
For more reading advice, pop into school and ask for one our Reading leaflets or speak to your child's teacher,
