Reading AT COPPICE VALLEY
We believe reading is the key to unlocking potential and a world of learning. You will find our two libraries full of exciting books and a dedicated teaching staff committed to putting reading at the heart of all the subjects we learn. We make sure we read to our classes, from Reception to Year 6, each and every day.
To teach phonics, we use Pearson Phonics Bug Scheme from Reception to Year 2. We continue teaching phonics through spelling lessons in Key Stage 2. In Reading Lessons in KS1-KS2 we use the structure of VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explaining, Retrieving and Summarising/Sequencing) to support the teaching of Comprehension skills. Read these posters to see how we develop these skills.

All the books are available to borrow from the school libraries.
How many have you read?
Reading for pleasure is an important part of every day at Coppice Valley. We provide a range of opportunities and materials to suit all children. For example, we read with footballers from Harrogate Town, visit the local nursery to read to the children as well as reading with our book buddies in school.
Our Schemes for Phonics and Reading
We have a fantastic phonics scheme in school called Phonics Bug, which is part of the Pearson Bug Club Reading scheme which we also use in Key Stage 1.
Reading at Home
15 minutes a day reading with your child = 1 million words heard a year! Share the books your child brings home and talk about any new vocabulary your child has not come across before. Encourage them to ask questions on things that they do not understand.
