Mrs Hardy (Mon, Tues, Wed) and Miss Baxter (Thurs, Fri)

Next half term in Oak Class, we will be continuing with Forest School on Tuesdays but PE days will be changing, as we begin our Balanceability sessions in the summer term.

Things to remember

  • Forest School: Tuesdays - The children can wear plain navy/black joggers, long sleeved navy/black top, and trainers to school. They must have named waterproofs and wellies in school.
  • PE: Wednesdays - The children can wear plain navy shorts/joggers, white/navy t-shirt and navy sweatshirt with trainers, no jewellery, long hair tied up, and they must have a water bottle in school.
  • Balanceability: Thursdays - We will be completing weekly sessions, working on balance and coordination skills, initially on balance bikes, moving onto pedal bikes as the children are ready. All children will be taking part, whatever their level of confidence on a bike. Please send your child with a named, correctly fitting helmet each Thursday for these sessions. If you need to borrow a school spare, just let us know. Bikes will be provided.
  • Drinks & Snacks - Please send your child every Monday with a clean, named water bottle. The children always have access to a fruit bowl, but you can send an additional healthy snack if you wish.
  • Beginning/End of the School Day - Gates open for drop off between 8:45-8:55am, and Oak Class finish school 3:25pm. If you are running late for any reason, please drop off/collect from the office, as the gates will be locked for the children's safety. Please inform the office if someone different will be collecting your child, or if they will be absent from school for any reason. You can do this via telephone or email.
  • Name everything! Please name everything coming into school including jumpers, hats, coats, shoes. This makes it much easier for us to return any lost belongings. If they are unnamed you may need to check the lost property box at the front of school. Please do not send any toys in from home to avoid any upset.
  • Book Change - We aim to change children's library books Thursdays. This is a book that your child chooses for you to read to them. Reading books will be changed on Fridays so please ensure that your child has their reading pack in their bookbag.
  • Sun Protection - As we approach the summer term, your child can bring a named sun hat into school. If required, all day sun-cream must be applied before coming to school.

Phonics Support

Phonics is recommended as the first strategy that children should be taught in helping them learn to read. It runs alongside other teaching methods such as Guided Reading and Shared Reading to help children develop all the other vital reading skills and hopefully give them a real love of reading. At Coppice Valley we use a programme called Phonics Bug to support early reading.

So what is phonics?

Words are made up from small units of sound called phonemes. Phonics teaches children to be able to listen carefully and identify the phonemes that make up each word. This helps children to learn to read words and to spell words. These might help to understand phonics jargon...

How to support your child at home

The document below supports understanding of the seven areas of learning and development at particular ages and stage

Mathematics Support

Maths Talk and Learn: to 20 and Beyond!

There are six key areas of early mathematics learning, which collectively provide a platform for everything children will encounter as they progress through their maths learning at primary school, and beyond:

  • Cardinality and Counting
  • Comparison
  • Composition
  • Pattern
  • Shape and Space
  • Measures

number-blocksThese areas form the fundamental mathematical basis of a CBeebies series of five-minute animated programmes called Numberblocks. We use these and the NCETM materials to draw out and build on the maths embedded in the stories contained in each episode.
