Our intent is to deliver a high-quality mathematics education that provides children with a deep, long-term, secure, and adaptable understanding of mathematical concepts. Using the White Rose Maths scheme, we aim to:
- Develop fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice.
- Strengthen reasoning and problem-solving skills by applying mathematics to a range of contexts.
- Ensure progression through coherent, carefully sequenced learning that builds upon prior knowledge.
- Promote mathematical confidence and resilience, encouraging all children to believe they can succeed.
- Embed mathematical language and representation, enabling learners to articulate and justify their thinking.
Curriculum Threads
Our Coppice Curriculum Threads: Brave, Kind and Curious are woven throughout our maths curriculum.
Brave
We are BRAVE in our maths curriculum by fostering a learning environment that encourages exploration, resilience, and collaboration. Our pedagogical approach embraces outdoor learning opportunities, where pupils apply mathematical concepts in real-world contexts - measuring distances in nature, exploring shapes in the environment, and collecting data from outdoor investigations. We promote rich mathematical communication through talk partners, group problem-solving, and reasoning tasks that build vocabulary and deepen understanding. By nurturing self-confidence, we empower children to take risks, learn from mistakes, and celebrate their progress, helping every learner to believe in their ability to succeed in maths.
Kind
We are KIND in our maths curriculum by creating an inclusive and respectful learning environment where every child feels valued and supported. Our pedagogical approach ensures that mathematical representations reflect a diverse range of cultures, contexts, and experiences, helping pupils see the relevance of maths in their own lives and in the wider world. We actively challenge stereotypes by highlighting diverse mathematicians, encouraging all children - regardless of gender, background, or ability - to see themselves as capable mathematicians. Through collaborative learning and respectful discussion, we promote equality, empathy, and kindness, ensuring that every voice is heard and every success is celebrated.
Curious
We are CURIOUS in our maths curriculum by nurturing a sense of wonder and encouraging pupils to explore mathematical ideas through discovery and investigation. Our pedagogical approach is centred on problem solving, where children are given opportunities to think critically, ask questions, and find multiple solutions to open-ended challenges. Creativity is celebrated as pupils use a range of strategies, manipulatives, and representations to make sense of concepts and explain their thinking. By fostering curiosity, we help children develop a love of maths, empowering them to become confident, independent learners who are excited to explore the patterns and possibilities within the subject.
