DT Progression Overview

At Coppice Valley we offer children a DT curriculum which is accessible to all, maximising the development of every child’s ability.

We recognise the importance of DT in fostering imagination and inspiring creativity and taking risks. Our curriculum teaches children the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. Children progressively build and apply a repertoire of knowledge and skills in order to design and make products. Their vocabularies increase as they are taught technical and precise language for the subject. Pupils learn to evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others. Our DT curriculum includes learning about the principles of nutrition and how to cook. DT affords our children the opportunity to extend their Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural understanding as they study great designs and designers of the past and present. We are committed to outdoor learning opportunities whenever we can. Having large grounds, we take full advantage of this to explore, utilise and create.

At Coppice Valley we aim to develop the children’s skills, knowledge and appreciation of Design and Technology by:-

  • Building on previously learnt skills and techniques year on year.
  • Teaching the children to think and work like designers. They’re encouraged to explore, experiment and take risks.
  • Expanding their vocabularies with technical language that are explicitly taught and then regularly used in lessons.
  • Regularly revisiting previous learning through quizzes and our Coppice Compendiums to ensure retention of knowledge.
  • Further developing the children’s social, moral, spiritual and cultural learning by introducing them to a variety of designers and builders from different eras and cultures. Children evaluate designs and products using technical language and their taught knowledge.
  • Delivering the majority of art lessons using a dedicated Design and Technology teacher.
  • Giving children the opportunity to design, develop and create a product within each unit of work.
