Intent

At Coppice Valley Primary School, we value reading as a key life skill and recognise its importance for academic success. We are determined to ensure that our children become confident, fluent readers. We aim to inspire a lifelong love of reading and want our pupils to develop the habit of reading widely both for pleasure and for information. We recognise that exposure to a rich and varied reading diet enables pupils to acquire new knowledge and deeper understanding, to build a wide vocabulary and to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially, and spiritually.

Implementation

Inspiring a love of reading

At Coppice Valley Primary School our children have access to a range of high-quality texts.  Each classroom in our school has a class library of carefully selected, age-appropriate books.

We follow the Little Wandle approach to phonics and early reading that draws on the latest research into how children learn best, how to ensure learning stays in children’s long term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers. We encourage all children to read frequently and foster a love of reading. All children are given the support they need to become fluent, confident and inquisitive readers.  ( Can we add a link here to our phonics section ?)

Our book choices are linked to our curriculum umbrellas. These high-quality texts are used in guided reading sessions or as class readers.

Our school has a well-stocked library. Children enjoy weekly library sessions where they can choose freely from the fiction and non-fiction sections.

Each year we celebrate World Book Day. This involves book-themed activity carousels across the school, dressing up as book characters or words, and sharing our favourite stories.

Impact

Our approach profoundly impacts children, fostering a love for reading and cultivating a genuine passion for books. Through a diverse range of authors and genres, our curriculum broadens literary horizons, contributing to cultural growth. This prepares students with valuable intellectual assets for the challenges of complex texts in secondary school and beyond.
