EYFS - Early Years Foundation Stage
The subject leader for EYFS is Mrs Hardy.
At Coppice Valley Primary School, the Early Years Foundation Stage provides a nurturing, play-based environment where children feel safe, valued, and inspired to explore. We believe that the early years are a time of wonder, discovery, and rapid growth. We are passionate about helping every child build strong foundations for learning and life.
Our experienced staff support each child’s development through a rich, balanced curriculum that promotes curiosity, creativity, and confidence. Indoors and outdoors, children are encouraged to play, explore, and ask questions, developing key skills in communication, physical coordination, early literacy and numeracy, and personal and social development.
Through strong relationships and a focus on wellbeing, we ensure that every child is known, supported, and celebrated, ready to thrive in the next stage of their learning journey.
Curriculum Threads
Our Coppice Curriculum Threads: Brave, Kind and Curious are woven throughout our EYFS curriculum.
Brave
In Oak Class, we believe that every child is brave, brave enough to ask questions, try new things, make mistakes, and grow. Our nurturing environment gives children the confidence to explore the world around them, to express their thoughts and feelings, and to take their first steps into learning with joy and courage. Through play, discovery, and strong relationships, we help children build resilience, independence, and self-belief. Whether they are climbing, creating, imagining, or problem-solving, our children are supported to take risks, persevere, and celebrate what makes them unique.
At the heart of our EYFS is a simple goal: to help every child feel safe, seen, and brave enough to become exactly who they are meant to be.
Kind
Kindness is at the heart of everything we do in Oak Class. We believe that children thrive in a caring environment where they feel valued, respected, and safe to be themselves. Our classroom is a place where friendships grow, feelings matter, and every child learns the importance of empathy, compassion, and cooperation.
Through play and exploration, our children learn to share, take turns, solve problems together, and celebrate each other’s successes. Our staff model gentle communication and thoughtful behaviour, helping children develop emotional awareness and strong social bonds.
From helping a friend put on their coat to showing care for nature during outdoor play, kindness is woven into daily life, building not just happy learners, but kind and confident individuals ready for the world ahead.
Curious
In Oak Class, we believe that curiosity is the spark that lights the fire of learning. From the moment they step into our setting, children are encouraged to explore, ask questions, and follow their natural sense of wonder.
Our play-based approach nurtures curious minds by providing rich, open-ended opportunities both indoors and outdoors. Whether they're investigating mini-beasts in the garden, mixing colours at the painting easel, or building dens in our Forest School, children are learning through hands-on discovery and joyful experimentation.
Guided by skilled practitioners who value every child’s ideas, we create an environment where questions are welcomed, mistakes are part of the process, and imagination is celebrated. In our EYFS, curiosity isn't just encouraged, it’s how learning begins.
