At Coppice Valley, our PSHE education is a planned, developmental programme of learning through which pupils acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future.

PSHE lessons include the statutory DfE Relationships and Health Education (RHE) objectives for primary schools. We use the Kapow PSHE Programme to deliver both Relationships & Health and PSHE.

See our RHE page

As part of our Personal Development provision, PSHE education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. PSHE education equips pupils to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives. It encourages them to be enterprising and supports them in making effective transitions, positive learning and career choices and in achieving economic wellbeing.

Values Led-Learning

Brave: Children will build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem, identify and manage risk, make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions.

Curious: Children and young people to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future.

Kind: Children recognise, accept and shape their identities. They understand and accommodate difference and change, learning to manage emotions and to communicate constructively in a variety of settings. Children develop an understanding of themselves, empathy and the ability to work with others will help pupils to form and maintain good relationships, develop the essential skills for future employability and better enjoy and manage their lives.

These values are supported by our school rules: Work Hard, Be Kind, Aim High.

Curriculum

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, PSHE is referred to as personal, social and emotional development. Children learn about themselves, where they fit into the world and to feel good about themselves. They learn to develop respect for others, social competence and a positive disposition to learn. Children learn through discussions, role play, stories and through positive interactions and relationships with adults and peers. Our programme, Kapow PSHE runs from EYFS to Year 6 and covers the following areas:

PSHE is planned as a spiral curriculum, enabling the children to revisit and build on prior knowledge in more detail, in an age-appropriate way. Learning is organised into themes that are taught every year, which are revisited over time, leading to a deep understanding. We follow the Kapow condensed curriculum, which allows us to also included essential e-safety lessons using Project Evolve which enables us to shape a better online life for all.

The curriculum map below details how the statutory elements of Relationships & Health Education are met in our PSHE programme.

The five key areas below are revisited in each year group, making pupil’s prior and future learning clear and supports the children in making connections between taught concepts.PHSE Coppice Valley 1

Year 6 also have a further key area: Identity.

What else do we do?

  • Supporting and learning from each other: At Coppice Valley, we believe in opportunities for cross year group teaching, as this enables us to learn from each other throughout the year. We teach mix year groups on days such as Mental Health Day, World Book Day and our annual Life Skills Day. This also supports transitions across the year groups as the children know the classrooms and teachers before moving year groups.
  • Assemblies: Other assemblies are planned carefully with a mix of interesting visitors, learning about British Values and protected characteristics as well as the opportunities for children to develop their speaking skills in whole class presentations.
  • Circle time: Every class has circle time each week, where they practise their speaking and listening skills, Teachers reinforce our school values or teach a tool for managing mental health.
  • Calm club: We understand that sometimes the playground can be an overwhelming place so whenever possible we offer a calm club during lunchtimes where children can colour or work in a quiet space.
  • Mental health: Our staff are trained in mental health first aid and we understand the importance of wellbeing in mind and body, our children are taught from EYFS upwards about the tools they might need to regulate themselves or care for a friend finding a situation stressful.
