Spanish
Learning to communicate in another language and develop an understanding of different cultures.
Our languages curriculum delivers the national curriculum requirements for language learning.
Teaching ensures that pupils make substantial progress in learning Spanish and is built upon the 3 pillars of language learning: Phonics, Vocabulary and Grammar.
Children develop skills in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing through a curriculum which is sequentially organised into small steps which build on prior knowledge ensuring that all children are able to succeed in developing language skills.
Alongside developing skills in communicating in a foreign language our curriculum is carefully designed to provide children with a window into different cultures, thus developing understanding of different cultures, traditions and beliefs and equipping children to be global citizens.
Modern Foreign Language (MFL) teaching begins in Key Stage 2 (KS2), but Early Years and Key Stage 1 (KS1) provide essential foundations. These early stages develop language skills in English and develop communication skills, phonemic awareness, and an understanding of language structure helping children build confidence for later language learning.
Curriculum Threads
Our Coppice Curriculum Threads: Brave, Kind and Curious are woven throughout our Spanish curriculum.
Brave: Creativity, Communication, and Self-Confidence
Spanish supports self-expression through writing, art, and drama while developing confident speaking and listening skills. Pupils practice real-world scenarios, build resilience, and showcase their achievements in presentations and performances.
Kind: Equality, Diversity, and Challenging Stereotypes
Through literature, music and discussions, pupils explore Spanish-speaking cultures, challenging stereotypes and embracing diversity. A "windows and mirrors" approach ensures representation while conversations promote inclusivity and respect.
Curious: Outdoor Learning, Curiosity & Discovery, Problem-Solving
Spanish lessons spark curiosity with hands-on activities and interactive games. Pupils solve real-world challenges like interpreting signs, ordering food in a café simulation, and engaging in conversations, strengthening critical thinking and independence.
