Our School

British Values, Tackling Radicalisation & SMSC

Coppice Valley bears

At Coppice Valley Primary School, we are committed to developing children who are confident, respectful and well prepared for life in modern Britain. The promotion of Fundamental British Values is an integral part of our school ethos, our curriculum design and our everyday practice.

The Department for Education expects all schools to actively promote the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. At Coppice Valley, these values are not taught in isolation; instead, they are woven throughout school life, helping children understand how values such as fairness, respect and responsibility shape our community and the wider world.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure that children develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to become respectful, resilient and active citizens in modern Britain.

The curriculum is underpinned by our curriculum threads of Brave, Kind and Curious, Our curriculum is carefully planned so that learning is meaningful, relevant and age‑appropriate. Children regularly express their ideas through discussion, debate, reflection and creative outcomes, helping them to understand different viewpoints and develop confidence in their own voice.

Religious Education (RE) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) play a key role in supporting this work.

In addition, the school uses No Outsiders resources to help children explore themes of equality, inclusion, diversity and respect in a sensitive and child‑friendly way. These resources support pupils to understand that everyone is welcome, differences are valued and discrimination of any kind is not acceptable.

Democracy

At Coppice Valley Primary School, children are actively encouraged to develop their understanding of democracy by having a meaningful voice and being involved in decision-making across school life. Pupil Voice is a strong feature of our school. Children regularly share their opinions on areas such as the curriculum, behaviour, wellbeing and our school environment. These views are gathered through class discussions, school improvement activities and an annual pupil voice conference which gives every child the opportunity to reflect on their experiences and suggest ways the school can continue to improve.

Pupils also experience democracy in action through elections for pupil leadership roles, including the School Council and participation in wider initiatives such as the Red Kite Youth Board.

Through our Coppice 50 experiences, pupils learn about participation, responsibility and the importance of expressing their views respectfully.

The Rule of Law

At Coppice Valley Primary School, children are taught to understand the importance of rules and laws and how they help keep everyone safe, fair and respectful. The value of the Rule of Law is consistently reinforced throughout the school day, within lessons, assemblies and the wider life of the school.

From the earliest years, pupils learn that rules exist to help us live and work together safely. Our school rules are referred to regularly and applied consistently. Children are supported to understand the reasons behind these rules, the responsibilities they involve, and the consequences of choices and actions when rules are not followed.

Through the curriculum, pupils develop a deeper understanding of laws at different levels – within the classroom, the school, and the wider society.  For example in History topic looking at Crime and Punishment.

In Religious Education, pupils discuss and compare religious laws and moral codes with the laws of the country, developing respect for different beliefs and an understanding of how laws operate in a diverse society.

Individual Liberty

At Coppice Valley Primary School, children are actively encouraged to make choices and decisions within a safe, supportive and nurturing environment. We help pupils to understand that with individual freedom comes responsibility, and that their choices should be made thoughtfully and with respect for others.

.Through PSHE, RSHE and Online Safety (E‑Safety) lessons, pupils are taught to understand their rights and personal freedoms and how to exercise these safely. They learn how to make informed choices, manage risk appropriately and recognise when to seek support.

Across school life, children are offered regular opportunities to make meaningful choices, for example: taking on roles of responsibility in a wide variety of pupil voice groups, opportunities to participate in our Coppice Gold programme, deciding whether to take part in wide range of extra curricular and enrichment opportunities#';;'

Younger pupils are supported to take safe, age‑appropriate risks as part of their learning, helping them to build confidence and independence in a carefully structured way.

Through these experiences and our Brave, Kind and Curious curriculum threads, Coppice Valley Primary School supports children to develop independence, self‑awareness and respect for others, preparing them to use their individual freedom responsibly and positively in modern British society.

Mutual Respect

At Coppice Valley Primary School, mutual respect sits at the heart of everything we do. Our school values of Brave, Kind and Curious underpin how we treat one another and how we learn to live positively as part of a community.

Children are taught that their behaviour, words and actions have an impact on both themselves and others. Through daily classroom practice, assemblies and PSHE, pupils learn to show kindness, empathy and respect, celebrating differences and valuing everyone as individuals.

Being Brave encourages children to stand up for themselves and others, to challenge unkind behaviour and to express their views respectfully. Being Kind supports pupils in showing care, tolerance and understanding towards others, while being Curious helps them learn about different cultures, beliefs and viewpoints, building openness and respect for diversity.

All members of the school community are expected to treat one another with courtesy, fairness and consideration. Adults consistently model respectful behaviour, setting clear expectations and supporting children to resolve disagreements in a positive and respectful way

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Coppice Valley Primary School is situated in an area with limited cultural diversity, which makes it especially important that children learn to respect and value differences in beliefs, cultures and ways of life. We aim to move pupils beyond simple tolerance towards understanding, respect and appreciation of diversity.

Our curriculum reflects a wide range of cultures, backgrounds and beliefs, with carefully chosen texts that introduce children to diverse voices and experiences. This helps pupils develop a broader understanding of the world and challenges stereotypes.

Diversity is also explored and celebrated through assemblies and whole‑school events, such as Round the World Day, which provides opportunities for children to learn about different countries, traditions and cultures and to celebrate the backgrounds and experiences within our own school community.

Through Religious Education and PSHE, pupils learn about a range of faiths and worldviews and are taught to respect both religious and non‑religious beliefs. These lessons encourage thoughtful discussion, curiosity and empathy.

Preventing Radicalisation and Extremism

Radicalisation is the process by which a person may come to adopt extreme or harmful political, social or religious views. Coppice Valley Primary School takes this risk seriously and adopts a zero‑tolerance approach to extremism of any kind.

Safeguarding children from radicalisation is viewed as part of our wider safeguarding responsibility. Through our strong ethos, clear values and carefully planned curriculum, we work proactively to protect pupils from exposure to extremist or harmful influences.

All staff are expected to uphold and promote the Fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are embedded throughout school life and help to build pupils’ resilience, critical thinking and respect for others.

Staff are trained to be able to recognise and respond to concerns and to remain vigilant to the possibility of radicalisation. Any worries are reported promptly to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Leads, in line with our safeguarding and child protection procedures.

Through this proactive and preventative approach, Coppice Valley Primary School ensures that pupils are kept safe and supported to become confident, respectful and responsible members of society.
